Kiwis connect with far away Rulna

In the December update we described the beginning of a new community project in far away Rulna. (link). This April Leo Duce from Caritas and Mark Gregory, principal from St Joseph's School in Christchurch, went to see for themselves. Here are some impressions.

The long walk
The ute had to stop two hours back from the end of the road because part of the road had slipped down the mountain. Father Marion is directing the helpers who will carry the wood, cement, paint tins and other things needed for the classrooms.

The short cut
Here is Mark and some of the villagers at the top of the hill. They took the short cut which was very steep and muddy. It seemed a long cut. No time for eating and Rulna is still many hours away.

The warm welcome
After 8 hours of walking it poured with rain. There were rivers of mud where the track had been. Another hour passed and Leo and Mark arrived in Rulna to a warm welcome from the villagers. The two kiwis had made it in to far away Rulna

The fantastic clothes
Here is Mark inside the church. He is surrounded by some amazing clothes. The children are dressed in their best clothes for this special visit. The Mass that morning brought many different people together.

The teacher
Mr Konga the head teacher, in the centre is surrounded by some of the young people who are learning at the school. The children are wearing bilums which are very useful hand woven bags. Bilums carry everything from food to babies.

The formal gathering

Hundreds of people sat on the ground. There was dancing and singing and speeches. The kiwis exchanged gifts with the Rulna people. One of the teachers was the translator from English to Tok Ples (local language).

The new classroom
With lots of small donations you have raised enough to build this new classroom block. This picture shows the old classroom. It is made from kunai leaves. A new one needs to be built every year. In the background is the new double classroom. It will last for many years.

Take a look inside the new and the old classroom

Look at the difference between darkness and light. Imagine what it must be like to learn in the old classrooms?

The happy children
You have helped to make a difference in far away Rulna. Leo and Mark have brought home many memories from their interesting visit. Gutwok tumas (Great work), Tenkyu (Thank You), Gut bai (Goodbye!) Haere Ra!
