NZCPPA President’s Report
PRESIDENTS REPORT
President's Newsletter
July 2008
Dear Catholic Primary School Principals
At our recent Annual meeting which was held in Christchurch in early July, I accepted the position of President of this association. I am very honoured to hold this position and I hope I can represent you and your local Catholic associations in a positive and respectful manner for the next two years.
I take this opportunity to thank the out-going president - Mrs Phil O'Connell-Cooper for her two years of sterling work as president. Thank you, Phil, for your leadership and your ongoing support of this organisation.
Congratulations to Mr Chris Strong and Mr Greg Day as recipients of the Outstanding Service Award presented at this meeting.
The following travel and study awards were presented:
The Furnware Travelling Scholarship of $1500.00 (GST inc) Awarded to:
Mr Michael Mokai of St Columba School, Frankton. Towards supporting him with
his trip to World youth Day.
The Konica Minolta Study Award of $2500.00 (GST inc) Awarded to:
Mrs Marie Hanton of St Joseph's School, Rangiora. Towards developing an induction
plan that will benefit her school and others.
Arnna Graham - Sommerville of St. Joseph's School, Fairfield. Towards the completion of her masters thesis.
The Jan Pratt Memorial Award of $1,500 was won by: Karl Vasau of Holy Family School, Porirua East.
Congratulations to the recipients of these awards.
Thank you to Furnware, Konica Minolta and ASB for your sponsorship and continued support of our association and local associations.
We farewelled a long standing principal of Catholic Schools and of our association. Mr Paul Manson retiring principal of St Joseph's School, Takapuna is taking up a new position as Advisor for Principals working out of Auckland University. We congratulate him on his appointment. Part of his job description is to work with his local Catholic Principals.
It is an ideal time when taking up this position to revisit what this association
is for.
The following forms part of our Strategic Plan:
MISSION STATEMENT - what we are here for
To support Principals in the delivery of quality Catholic Education to
students in Aotearoa New Zealand Catholic Primary Schools.
OBJECTIVES - what we will achieve
1. To structure a National forum through which Diocesan Association concerns
can be represented and through which National Policy can be developed.
2. To promote the development of competent, well-informed and confident primary
principals.
3. To support the development of Catholic Schools by:
(a) Promoting effective Principal/Board working relationships
(b) Fostering a professional, collegial support network for
Principals of Catholic Schools.
4. To initiate and participate in educational debate and policy development.
The NZCPPA executive meets four times a year work at these objectives. Each
member has a portfolio.
My stated intention for the next two years is to work with Catholic School principals to support, foster and nurture them as they work through the processing of their Catholic Schools' Curriculum to align with the New Zealand Curriculum document.
I have begun. I have set up a wikispace and it is being trialled before it is offered as a collaborative method of support. You will be invited to join this collaborative wiki within the next month. Wikis are a new tool to me and so is curriculum leadership to fellow principals. My ICT facilitator is assisting me with the technology. Two Catholic School Principals in Hamilton Diocese trained as MOE Curriculum Leaders are helping me with the Curriculum design processing. Hopefully this initiative will assist and support you and give you the opportunity to support other Catholic school principals.
In the meantime - enjoy your third term of 2008.
God Bless
Bill Ahern
