November 2009

Dear Catholic Primary School Principals

Our last NZCPPA Executive meeting held in Christchurch earlier this month was full of interesting outcomes. I thought it timely to share with you two of the issues that have precipitated since then.

1. The Religious Education Digital Resource
2. The Change in Sponsorship from 2010

The Religious Education Digital Resource
After discussion around this issue it was decided that we should write to The New Zealand Bishops Conference (NZCBC) and express our concerns.

I received a reply from Archbishop John Dew, President of NZCBC, which comprehensively addressed our concerns and clarified the NCRS approach. I spoke to Archbishop John Dew about the letter and he agreed that this letter could be shared with you. It clarifies their position and helps set the pathway forward.

The NZCPPA will establish a Principals Reference Group to advise on the future development of the religious education curriculum.

Archbishop John Dew's letter is attached.

The Change in Sponsorship from 2010
A series of events has caused us to re evaluate and change our photocopier sponsorship from Konica Minolta to Sharp beginning in January 2010.

Every side has its story. The following events and thoughts caused our change.

We have been in partnership with Konica and then Konica Minolta for 13 years. Our relationship has been strong and equal in that we accepted their sponsorship and in return we encouraged NZCPPA members to at least ask them for their quote when it came to updating photocopiers. We as an exec have worked hard at this promotional exercise. It was our contribution. As our Gold sponsor Konica Minolta had exclusivity in their field and wide promotion Nationally and Diocesan level. In October last year 90% of our Catholic Schools had Konica Minolta photocopiers

In the second half of last year we began negotiations to renew our three year sponsorship agreement. We were lead to believe that our sponsorship contract would be renewed. Then in November Konica asked us to drop to Bronze level for 12 months. At this time the Executive agreed because of loyalty and our strong partnership. This reduced our funding considerably. In accepting the bronze sponsorship it was agreed that a new sponsorship agreement at Gold level would need to be confirmed by 1 September 2009.

Recently our relationship has slipped. The following events indicate this erosion:
1. In 2009 our sponsorship amount was cut to $8,000.
2. Late payment was a common issue. We had to remind them of our contract.
3. Their Marketing Manager changed.
4. They did not meet the deadline or contact us to renew our contract. We had to ask.
5. We had become the partner needing them. We had to ask.
6. We had to remind them of their expectations for a proposal.
7. A 48 hour notice was set.
8. A phone call from the new Managing Director was accusing and demanding.
9. The proposal arrived in the 11th hour.

At this stage we felt that our relationship with Konica was eroded. The Managing Director blamed others for the issues. We felt that we were being compromised because of the monopoly Konica Minolta had in the Catholic industry. This was evident when we accepted a lower figure but the Catholic Conference received the funding. Service from Konica Minolta around the country was not an issue.

The Executive were unanimous in their agreement to move to Sharp as we felt that Sharp had products that would assist members for ICT resources in their schools and communities.

We remind members that Sharp will have exclusive sponsorship rights at National and Diocesan Level for photocopiers from 1 January 2010. The sponsorship agreement that has been forged with Sharp developed from a contact in the Dunedin Diocese and has been well researched. Sharp presented their proposal to our Executive in Christchurch at the beginning of November. The Sharp Partnership also allows member schools "very special rates" for purchases of electronic equipment i.e. data projectors.

Sponsorship is an important part of our Association's budget. Part of our sponsorship income is passed back to Diocesan Principal Associations each year.

If you have any queries or concerns regarding our change in Gold Sponsorship please contact one of us.
